Like wilebill said, Monk is always a solid choice for secondary when you're starting out, for nothing other than a reusable resurrection skill - your other skills should be geared to doing what your profession does best (which, as Assassin, is killing mobs).
Warrior is also a viable choice for secondary on a Sin, if only for an IAS (increased attack speed) skill (Flurry or Frenzy) until you get your hands on Critical Agility in Nightfall (IAS+Armor Boost, yes please).

Glad you chose assassin, was just about to recommend it. Warrior, is, as most people have said, a sound class, but they shouldn't forget 'sins. They have very high DPS if you know what you're doing, flashy animations, nice outfits, cool skills, and can actually survive quite well if you know what you're doing, as Marty said. Also, they're quite a fun prof to use.
However, surviving really shouldn't be your first aim. You will die as your first character, since it's your first guy, and you don't have money to get good armour, or equipment, you will die a few times. Still, sin (tied with my ranger) is my favourite class, have fun with it !
Oh and for most classes, monk would be my first second prof, for emergency healing, and a reusable res .
